Dug Up From A Grave On Top Of The Bluff

Strangers Take It At Dawn

Detectives Working On The Case Fail To Get Any Track Of Mysterious Grave Openers

The mysterious action of two men in unearthing a box from the lonely grave on a high bluff in Union Park, and in hurrying it away under cover at daybreak to parts unknown has caught considerable excitement in that section.   Detectives have been working on the case, but nothing has been found throwing light on the affair.

Mrs MM McCarroll who lives at the corner of 5th Avenue and Helena Street, a few yards from the bluff, was, as far as known, the only eyewitness to the event.

The first seen of the two strangers was when they were carrying the box down the side of the bluff.  The box, according to Mrs McCarroll, was about two and a half feet long and about a foot and a half wide and about a foot deep.  It was made of heavy lumber.   The men hurriedly placed it on a wooden wagon, covered it up with stones, and then drove away.  It was just at dawn, when most of the residents are asleep.

Mrs McCarroll, who then gave the matter no thought, saw one of the men reappear on the bluff a day or two later and again rarely in the morning.  As the men acted strangely, she and her son went to the top of the bluff.  As they approached, the mysterious man disappeared on the other side of the bluff and has not been seen since.  They found the grave from which the box had been taken and which, Mrs McCarroll say, smelt strongly of drugs.

Mrs McCarroll’s Story

“It is the most mysterious thing that I ever saw," said Mrs McCarroll yesterday.  “When I saw the men working away with the box, I went to the back of my lot to see what they were doing at that time of the morning."   "No one goes up on the bluff for pleasure, and so I suspected something was wrong at once."   "The box was made of heavy timber and the men acted as if it was heavy. "

"The driver was comparatively well dressed, but the other man looked very much like a tramp."   "He was wearing a very short beard which I believe was not his own."   "They both pulled their hats down over their eyes, so that I could not see their faces. " "The box, when it was placed on the wagon, was covered up with stones."    "I felt sure that there was something wrong abut the matter."   "The box looked as if it had been buried for a long time."

“It may have contained a body of a baby."   "We found some hair just at the gravesite.”

Detectives are puzzled over this strange hole in the ground and the recounting of event by Mrs McCarroll.

Anyone having an idea or clue is asked to contact the police.
