The New Aubrey White Parkway

Warm weather brought motorists, hikers, and picnickers in large numbers to Spokane’s newest playground – the Spokane River Parkway Reserve running between the Bowl and Pitcher and Nine Miles Falls.

Scores used the picnic grounds just completed by the Seven Mile Civilian Conservation Corp boys located on the east side across from the Bowl and Pitcher, just off the new Parkway Drive along the east side of the river.   Crossing the river on the newly built bridge, hikers found a network of wide graveled trails leading through the basalt rock formations to viewpoints heretofore only reached by steep goat paths.

The walking western viewpoint atop the high volcanic bluff above the Bowl and Pitcher affords a sweeping view of the city and the valley.

The CCC camp at Seven Mile was host to a dedication ceremony attended by a delegation of Spokane business leaders.  They were shown the Park Reserve on a tour led by Aubrey White, head of the Park Board.  The 30 dignitaries then visited the picnic grounds, inspected the landscaping work along the new Aubrey White Parkway Drive, and saw the newly improved graveled roadways at the Deep Creek gorge and Nine Mile Falls.
